Today, Governor Roy Cooper announced the appointment of Kevin O’Barr as the new Commissioner of Labor. This decision follows the resignation of Commissioner Josh Dobson on November 6. O’Barr will hold the position until Luke Farley, the Commissioner-Elect, assumes office in January.
Governor Cooper expressed confidence in O’Barr's abilities, stating, “Kevin O’Barr’s background, experience and deep knowledge of the Department of Labor will help ensure a smooth transition for Commissioner-Elect Farley while continuing the critical functions of the department through the end of the year.” He also acknowledged Dobson’s service: “I am thankful for Commissioner Dobson’s years of public service to our state and I look forward to working with Commissioner O’Barr as he assumes this role on the Council of State.”
O’Barr is currently serving as Bureau Chief of Consultative Services at the North Carolina Department of Labor (NCDOL). His career at NCDOL spans twenty-four years, including roles in OSH Compliance. Before joining NCDOL, he worked in private industry sectors such as toxicology and environmental chemistry.
He holds a degree in Environmental Chemistry from Rollins College and a Master of Science degree in Industrial Hygiene from the University of Washington’s School of Public Health and Community Medicine. Additionally, he has a graduate certificate in Training and Development from NC State University.
The appointment takes effect immediately.
