Governor Josh Stein and emergency officials are advising residents of North Carolina to prepare for severe weather expected on Wednesday. The state is facing potential severe storms, strong winds, flooding, and isolated tornadoes. Governor Stein emphasized the importance of staying informed: “As our state from the mountains to the coast faces a severe storm, strong winds, and potential flooding late tonight and all day tomorrow, we urge all North Carolinians to stay tuned to their local weather forecast and stay safe.” He also advised having a plan for immediate cover if a tornado warning is issued.
The National Weather Service has introduced a Marginal Risk (level 1 of 5) for severe storms in parts of the mountains overnight Tuesday into Wednesday morning. A line of storms ahead of a cold front will move into western North Carolina before sunrise on Wednesday, continuing eastward throughout the day. This system may produce wind gusts exceeding 70 mph as it progresses across central and eastern North Carolina.
Central and eastern regions face an enhanced risk (level 3 of 5) for severe weather on Wednesday with possible isolated tornadoes. Residents are encouraged to monitor local forecasts and adjust their plans based on their area's risk level.
Dry conditions combined with gusty winds today heighten wildfire risks statewide. Outdoor burning is discouraged.
Residents are urged to take several precautions:
- Seek shelter inside sturdy structures during severe weather.
- Secure outdoor items that could become airborne.
- Ensure cell phones are charged with emergency alerts enabled.
- Have a plan ready if a warning is issued.
