Governor Josh Stein and First Lady Anna Stein participated in Read Across America Week by visiting elementary schools. The First Lady read "If You Give a Mouse a Cookie" by Laura Numeroff at Brunson Elementary in Winston-Salem, her alma mater. Governor Stein visited Belville Elementary School in Brunswick County, where he read "Where the Wild Things Are" by Maurice Sendak to a kindergarten class. During his visit, he proclaimed March as Reading Month in North Carolina.
Governor Stein emphasized the importance of early literacy for education. “Early literacy is a critical foundation for a strong education, and we must work to ensure every child leaves the early grades as a strong reader,” said Governor Josh Stein. He highlighted the need for evidence-backed teaching methods and fostering a love for reading among students.
Governor Stein advocates for high-quality education for all students in North Carolina public schools. His focus includes improving educational outcomes from pre-K through higher education and preparing graduates with skills necessary for employment and contributing to the state.
The event was part of Governor Stein's broader efforts to enhance educational initiatives across North Carolina.
