Governor Josh Stein, in collaboration with Dogwood Health Trust, has unveiled a $30 million grant program aimed at aiding small businesses affected by Hurricane Helene. The initiative is designed to support economic recovery in Western North Carolina. Small businesses with annual revenues up to $2.5 million can apply for grants of up to $50,000 through the Western North Carolina Small Business Initiative.

Governor Stein emphasized the importance of supporting local businesses during challenging times: “Small businesses are the heart of western North Carolina and need our support to get through these slow winter months,” he stated. He expressed pride in leveraging state funds alongside contributions from Dogwood Health Trust.

Dr. Susan Mims, President and CEO of Dogwood Health Trust, highlighted their commitment: “As a private foundation committed to Western North Carolina’s health and wellbeing, Dogwood Health Trust created the Western North Carolina Small Business Initiative last fall as part of our larger Helene relief efforts to provide grants to small businesses most impacted by the storm.”

Additionally, Governor Stein announced $3 million allocations each for Baptists on Mission and Habitat for Humanity NC. These funds will aid housing repair initiatives essential for rebuilding homes damaged by the hurricane.

Richard Brunson, Executive Director of Baptists on Mission, acknowledged the state's support: “Our volunteers are working day in and day out to get homeowners back into their homes as quickly as possible.” Marlowe Foster, President & CEO of Habitat for Humanity North Carolina, echoed this sentiment: “We have seen tremendous need across the western North Carolina region... We thank Governor Stein for recognizing the needs of this region.”

The hurricane resulted in a $13 billion revenue loss for affected businesses. The grants aim to assist with payrolls and operating expenses while stabilizing the local economy as tourism begins its recovery.

Appalachian Community Capital will manage these funds with assistance from the Community Reinvestment Fund during application processing. Eligible businesses must be located within specific counties covered by federal disaster declarations or within Dogwood Health Trust's designated areas.
