Eric Tulsky, General Manager of the Carolina Hurricanes, announced that goaltender Frederik Andersen has been placed on injured reserve. In a corresponding move, defenseman Ty Smith has been recalled from the Chicago Wolves of the American Hockey League (AHL).
Andersen, 35, underwent knee surgery on November 22 and has missed the last 37 games for Carolina since October 28. This season, he holds a record of 3-1-0 with a goals-against average of 1.48 and a save percentage of .941 in four games with the Hurricanes. Originally from Herning, Denmark, Andersen played in 16 games during the 2023-24 season with a record of 13-2-0 and posted a goals-against average of 1.84 and a save percentage of .932. He was selected by Anaheim in the third round, 87th overall, at the 2012 NHL Draft and has participated in 499 NHL games across his career with teams including the Ducks, Toronto Maple Leafs, and Hurricanes.
Ty Smith, aged 24, made his debut for the Hurricanes on December 28 and has scored two points (one goal and one assist) in eight games this season. With the Wolves this season, he accumulated ten points (three goals and seven assists) with a plus-11 rating over thirteen games. A native of Lloydminster, Alberta, Smith spent last season with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins where he achieved forty-three points (nine goals and thirty-four assists) across sixty-three games. Initially drafted by New Jersey as their first-round pick at seventeenth overall during the 2018 NHL Draft; Smith's career includes appearances in one hundred thirty-one NHL games earning forty-nine points (nine goals and forty assists) along with fifty-two penalty minutes.
