The National Hockey League has announced that Carolina Hurricanes forward Jordan Staal has been named the NHL’s "Second Star" for the week ending January 12. This is the first time Staal has received this recognition as one of the league's three weekly stars.
Staal, aged 36, led all NHL skaters in goals and points during the week with seven points (five goals, two assists) across four games from January 6 to January 12. He began the week with a goal and an assist in a game against Tampa Bay on January 7. On January 9, he achieved his fourth career hat trick in a victory over Toronto, including his second shorthanded goal of the season. His performance included a three-game goal streak and a four-game point streak, both marking season highs.
Hailing from Thunder Bay, Ontario, Staal ranks among franchise leaders for the Hurricanes in several categories. Over his career with Carolina and Pittsburgh, he has accumulated significant achievements including winning the Stanley Cup with Pittsburgh in the 2008-09 season. Drafted second overall by Pittsburgh in 2006, Staal joined Carolina via trade in June 2012.
