Today, Governor Roy Cooper of North Carolina emphasized the importance of preparing for the winter season as Winter Weather Preparedness Week begins. He highlighted the potential for dangerous winter weather conditions, including extreme cold, snow, and ice.
"Winter weather is already impacting North Carolina with lower than average temperatures across the state and we want people to be prepared for the possibility of extreme cold, snow, ice and other hazardous weather," Governor Cooper stated. He advised residents to have an emergency plan in place, update their preparedness kits, and stay informed through trusted sources regarding weather forecasts and alerts.
Governor Cooper also urged citizens to monitor local media for updates on winter weather conditions. He explained that a Winter Storm Watch indicates favorable conditions for heavy snow or freezing rain within 24-48 hours. A Winter Storm Warning signifies high confidence in significant impacts within 12-36 hours. A Winter Weather Advisory suggests expected wintry weather that may cause travel difficulties within 12-36 hours.
North Carolina Emergency Management officials recommend keeping a three-day supply of nonperishable food and medication at home. They advise having fresh batteries for radios and flashlights, dressing warmly in layers, properly venting heaters, using generators safely outside to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning, and monitoring changing conditions with NOAA radios or alert apps.
Residents are encouraged to keep alternative heating sources and fire extinguishers available. Emergency kits should be stored in vehicles containing essentials like scrapers, jumper cables, blankets, first-aid kits, and road maps. Pet owners should prepare emergency supplies for their animals as well.
For those traveling during adverse weather conditions, motorists are reminded to maintain safe distances from other vehicles and reduce speed on snow- or ice-covered roads. If necessary, drivers should pull off highways safely rather than continue driving in worsening conditions.
