Attorney General Josh Stein has expressed support for a decision that aims to enhance competition in the healthcare sector of western North Carolina. Stein stated, "This decision is going to increase competition in health care in western North Carolina, which will in turn decrease costs and improve quality for patients." He had previously urged the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services (NCDHHS) to reject Mission's application for additional beds, advocating instead for another provider to expand its presence in the region.

Stein emphasized his hope that this move would result in better and more affordable care for residents. In 2022, he successfully requested NCDHHS to deny Mission's Certificate of Need application for 67 additional acute care beds. This was intended to allow a different provider to introduce more competition into the local healthcare market.
