RXO, a freight transportation company based in Charlotte, plans to expand its operations in Mecklenburg County. This expansion is expected to create 216 new jobs over the next several years and involves an investment of $13.7 million.
Governor Roy Cooper announced the expansion, emphasizing North Carolina's strengths as a business location. "It’s great to see another North Carolina company decide that our state remains the perfect location to grow and thrive,” said Governor Cooper. He highlighted the state's infrastructure, business climate, and skilled workforce as key factors in RXO's decision.
The company's global logistics network connects shippers with independent carriers for efficient freight transportation. The expansion will help RXO meet increased demand and offer opportunities for various roles such as transportation brokers and technology analysts.
Drew Wilkerson, CEO of RXO, expressed enthusiasm about expanding in Charlotte. “North Carolina’s strategic location, robust infrastructure, and skilled talent pool make it a vital hub for the transportation industry," he stated.
North Carolina Commerce Secretary Machelle Baker Sanders also welcomed RXO's decision after an extensive site evaluation process. She noted the importance of teamwork and investment in education and workforce training systems for economic development success.
The average salary for new positions will be $89,769 compared to Mecklenburg County's current average wage of $84,797. The annual payroll impact from these positions is estimated at over $19 million per year.
A Job Development Investment Grant (JDIG) has been approved by the state's Economic Investment Committee to facilitate this project. Over 12 years, it is projected to boost North Carolina’s economy by nearly $498 million. The JDIG agreement allows potential reimbursement up to $1,636,500 based on performance verification by state departments.
Because RXO selected a Tier 3 site in Mecklenburg County, part of their JDIG agreement involves transferring $545,500 into the state’s Industrial Development Fund – Utility Account to aid rural community infrastructure upgrades elsewhere in North Carolina.
N.C. Senator Rachel Hunt expressed excitement about the incoming jobs and investment: "RXO has been a great partner in our community." N.C. Representative Wesley Harris praised collaborative efforts bringing this project to fruition: “We are thrilled to see such a great company make such a strong investment."
The project's partners include several local organizations along with state entities like the North Carolina Department of Commerce and Economic Development Partnership of North Carolina.
