NC State's women's golf team has appointed Courtney Gunter as an assistant coach, as announced by head coach Darby Sligh. Gunter transitions to the Wolfpack after leading Western Carolina's golf program since 2018.
"Courtney mirrors the values we hold dear in our program," Sligh stated. "She is a relentless competitor, leads through relationships, and is passionate about digging in and doing the work it takes to compete for championships. She has a wealth of experience as both a head and assistant coach and also knows what it takes to compete and play in the ACC. Her calm, confident energy will make an immediate impact on our players. It's an exciting time to be a part of NC State athletics and we are excited to have her here."
During her tenure at Western Carolina, Gunter led the Catamounts to notable achievements, including seven tournament titles since 2018 and a return to postseason play in spring 2023. The team secured four titles during the 2022-23 season alone.
Gunter received recognition as the 2023 Southern Conference Coach of the Year following record-breaking performances by her players Brie Mapanao, Elizabeth Lohbauer, and Madison Isaacson. Under her leadership, these athletes achieved single-season scoring records and earned spots on the All-Southern Conference squad.
Before joining Western Carolina, Gunter spent two years at Coastal Carolina from 2016-18, where she contributed to winning their first Sun Belt conference title. Her coaching career began with three years at East Carolina University while completing her master's degree in sport management.
"Huge thanks to Darby Sligh and Stephanie Menio for believing in me and giving me this opportunity," expressed Gunter. "After spending time with Darby, her energy, passion, and vision for this program is what completely sold me on wanting to be part of this team. I can't wait to get started and help take NC State Golf to the next level! Go Pack!"
Gunter's collegiate playing career was marked by success at UNC from 2009-2013, where she contributed significantly to five team titles and participated in multiple NCAA tournaments.
Originally from Matthews, N.C., Gunter excelled in high school golf at Porter Ridge High School before earning accolades such as the 2011 Carolinas' Amateur title.
Gunter holds a bachelor's degree in psychology and exercise sports science from UNC.
