Governor Roy Cooper's request for a federal Major Disaster Declaration due to Potential Tropical Cyclone Eight has been approved. This declaration allows for Public Assistance funding from FEMA to support emergency work and the repair or replacement of damaged facilities in Brunswick, Carteret, New Hanover, and Onslow counties.

Additionally, the Small Business Administration (SBA) has granted an SBA disaster declaration for Brunswick, Columbus, New Hanover, and Pender counties. This enables access to low-interest loans for business owners, homeowners, and renters. Governor Cooper had previously issued a State Type 1 Disaster Declaration for Individual Assistance in these areas on October 16.

"This storm brought historic rainfall and severe flooding to several areas of our state causing significant damage," stated Governor Cooper. "These disaster declarations will help bring needed relief for folks impacted by the storm, including small business owners."

Governor Cooper had reached out to President Joe Biden and United States SBA Director Kem Fleming last week. Both requests have been approved, ensuring additional federal resources are available in the affected regions. A FEMA major disaster declaration provides various federal assistance programs aimed at public infrastructure needs, covering both emergency and permanent work. The SBA offers disaster loans that can assist businesses, homeowners, renters, and private nonprofit organizations with physical damage repairs and other related expenses.
