Roger E. "Chip" Hawley has officially taken on the role of Director of the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation. His appointment by Governor Roy Cooper was confirmed by the General Assembly.

Governor Cooper expressed confidence in Hawley's capabilities, stating, "Chip Hawley has set a high standard throughout his career and will lead the SBI well thanks to his decades of experience and leadership in law enforcement. I am thankful for his willingness to serve our state and work to keep North Carolina families and communities safe."

Hawley himself shared his enthusiasm for the new position, saying, "I look forward to serving with the SBI as Director and am grateful to the Governor and the legislature for the opportunity to lead this agency’s work alongside its tremendous public servants."

With over 40 years in state and local law enforcement, Hawley's experience is extensive. He previously served as Chief of the North Carolina State Capitol Police. His career also includes roles at the Wake County Sheriff’s Office where he held positions such as Major of Criminal Investigations, Major of Patrol Division, and Captain of Patrol Division. Additionally, he worked as a Police Officer at both Coats Police Department and North Carolina State University.

Following Hawley's transition to Director, Deputy Chief Terry Green has been appointed as the new State Capitol Police Chief by N.C. Department of Public Safety Secretary Eddie M. Buffaloe Jr., with both appointments taking effect on Wednesday.
