Karem Felton, a 31-year-old resident of Elizabeth City, has been sentenced to 147 months in prison for drug and firearm offenses. The charges stem from an investigation by the Pasquotank County Sheriff's Office following a shooting incident on May 18, 2023. Felton was found guilty of possessing over forty grams of fentanyl and ten grams of a fentanyl analogue with intent to distribute.

The investigation began when Elizabeth City Police responded to reports of shots fired at a vehicle. Officers discovered eight .300 caliber rifle shell casings and identified Felton as the shooter through city camera footage. The next day, law enforcement searched Felton's residence, uncovering firearms, ammunition, cash, and drugs.

Robert M. DeWitt, Special Agent in Charge of the FBI in North Carolina, emphasized the importance of disrupting drug trafficking: “Disrupting drug trafficking in our communities is a critical part of our mission. The FBI and our local partners are working very hard to take dangerous drugs off of our streets, along with the people who peddle them.”

Pasquotank County Sheriff Tommy Wooten expressed gratitude for the collaborative efforts: “I want to thank my Deputies at the Pasquotank County Sheriff’s Office, Elizabeth City Police Department, Federal Bureau of Investigations and the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the great work that has been done to combat the drug and violent crime issues we face on a daily basis.”

The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Julie A. Childress and Katherine S. Englander after being investigated by multiple agencies including Elizabeth City Police Department and Federal Bureau of Investigation.

Michael F. Easley Jr., U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of North Carolina announced Felton's sentencing which was handed down by United States District Court Judge Louis W. Flanagan.
