The Carolina Hurricanes are navigating a crucial offseason, facing the potential re-signing or loss of 18 pending free agents. The team's playoff streak over the past six seasons underscores the significance of this period as they aim to remain contenders for the Stanley Cup.

Eric Tulsky has been appointed as the new General Manager, taking on a pivotal role in determining the future composition of the team. Tulsky, previously serving as interim GM since May 24, brings a unique background to his new position. He holds 27 U.S. patents and transitioned from a scientist at QuantumScape to various roles within the Hurricanes organization over the past decade.

“It’s an honor [that] the organization has entrusted me with stewardship over our operation," Tulsky stated regarding his appointment. "That faith in me, that trust in me to keep things together, to have everyone feel valued and able to contribute, and put in a position to be successful, is really important to me.”

Tulsky's career trajectory includes a degree from Harvard and a PhD in chemistry from Cal Berkeley. He began with the Hurricanes as a consultant in 2014 before moving through roles such as manager of analytics and vice president of hockey management and strategy.

Reflecting on his journey, Tulsky said, “I’ve grown a ton. I came in with some soft skills that came from other industries but zero working knowledge of a hockey team. Over the 10 years, I’ve been really fortunate to have some great mentors and some coworkers who have helped me a lot.”

As General Manager, Tulsky plans minimal changes to organizational philosophy but aims for improvements in processes and execution. He emphasizes collaboration within his team: “There’s a lot of components to the job of general manager... making sure we have all of the information we can... synthesizing that into a decision that everyone feels comfortable signing off on.”

The immediate tasks ahead include finalizing player signings before July 1st's free agency period and preparing for next weekend's NHL Draft. “It’s certainly a summer where we have a lot of work to do,” acknowledged Tulsky.

An introductory press conference for Eric Tulsky is scheduled for Wednesday at PNC Arena.
