ATHENS, Ga. – The No. 10 national seed NC State baseball team lost game two of the Athens Super Regional 11-2 to seventh-seeded Georgia on Sunday afternoon at Foley Field.
Sunday's defeat sets up a decisive matchup between NC State (37-21) and the Bulldogs. The time and TV designation for Monday's contest have yet to be announced.
Georgia (43-16) second baseman Slate Alford put the Bulldogs ahead in the first inning with a two-run homer to left-center. Charlie Condon smacked a one-out single before Alford's home run made it 2-0 in the opening frame.
The Bulldogs extended their lead in the third inning with another home run. Tre Phelps' two-out, three-run homer to center field made it 5-0 Georgia heading into the bottom of the third.
Georgia added three more runs in the fourth inning behind Kolby Branch's RBI double, Corey Collins' RBI groundout, and Phelps' bases-loaded hit-by-pitch to make it 8-0. The Bulldogs tacked on another run in the sixth with their third homer of the game for a 9-0 lead. Additional runs in the seventh and eighth innings pushed the score to its final margin at 11-2.
Noah Soles put NC State on the board in the bottom of the seventh with an RBI fielder's choice. Jacob Cozart added another run for NC State in the bottom of the eighth with his 19th homer of the season.
Georgia starting pitcher Leighton Finley (6-1) secured the win after pitching 6.2 innings, striking out five, allowing one run and eight hits.
Freshman southpaw Ryan Marohn made his NCAA Tournament debut for NC State, pitching four innings. Senior Hollis Fanning and junior Carson Kelly also made their NCAA Tournament debuts, throwing the final two innings for NC State.
Wolfpack starting pitcher Dominic Fritton (3-6) took the loss.
Shortstop Brandon Butterworth led NC State with a multi-hit performance.
UP NEXT
NC State and Georgia will face off Monday in a winner-take-all matchup at Foley Field. The winner will advance to the College World Series for an opening-round game against either Kentucky or Oregon State.
