City of Durham recently issued the following announcement.

American Tobacco District Waterline Replacement – Phase 1 Project Update and Two-Week Look Ahead

September 24, 2021 

The City appreciates your ongoing patience with the work along the busy corridors associated with this project.  Additional information regarding this project can be found at: https://durhamnc.gov/2780/American-Tobacco-District-Waterline-Repl.

Planned Road / Lane Closures will occur as follows:

  • Week of 9/27: 
    • Lane closures and shifts in Chapel Hill Street between Gregson Street and Pettigrew Street.
    • Varying lane closures and shifts in Duke Street between Yancey Street and Pettigrew Street.
    • Lane closures and shifts in Gregson Street between Pettigrew Street and Chapel Hill Street.
    • Lane closures and shifts in Memorial Street between Gregson Street and Duke Street.
  • Week of 10/4: 
    • Lane closures and shifts in Chapel Hill Street between Gregson Street and Pettigrew Street.
    • Varying lane closures and shifts in Duke Street between Yancey Street and Pettigrew Street.
    • Lane closures and shifts in Gregson Street between Pettigrew Street and Chapel Hill Street.
    • Lane closures and shifts in Memorial Street between Gregson Street and Duke Street.
Bicycle Lane and Sidewalk impacts will occur as follows:

  • Dedicated bike lanes in Chapel Hill Street between Gregson and Pettigrew streets will be removed as part of roadway lane shifts.
  • Varying sidewalk on the north and south sides of Chapel Hill Street between Gregson and Pettigrew streets will be closed to accommodate waterline installation.
  • The sidewalk on the west side of Duke Street between Yancey Street and Pettigrew Street will have temporary closures to accommodate waterline installation.
  • Portions of the sidewalk on the south side of Memorial Street between Gregson Street and Duke Street will have temporary closures to accommodate waterline installation.
Saturday – Sunday September 25-26, 2021:

  • No work will take place on Saturday or Sunday.
Week of September 27, 2021:

  • Duke Street between Yancey Street / NC-147 and Pettigrew Street will have varying lane closures and traffic shifts to accommodate waterline installation and abandonments.
    • Lane shifts in Duke Street between Yancey and Pettigrew streets using temporary pavement markings will be implemented.
    • Varying lane shifts with flaggers or temporary detours will be utilized for traffic control while work is taking place near the Duke / Chapel Hill and Duke / Memorial intersections and at abandonment locations.
    • Traffic control signs and markings will be used for the lane closures and shifts.
    • The sidewalk on the west side of Duke Street between Yancey Street and Pettigrew Street will have temporary closures to accommodate waterline installation.
    • Noise levels in excess of the current City noise ordinance are anticipated during work hours.
    • Planned work hours are 7 AM to 7 PM.
    • No water or sewer service disruptions are anticipated.
  • Chapel Hill Street between Gregson Street and Pettigrew Street will have lane closures and traffic shifts to accommodate waterline installation.
    • Lane shifts in Chapel Hill Street between Gregson and Pettigrew streets using temporary pavement markings are implemented.
    • Lane shifts with flaggers will be utilized for traffic control while work is taking place in intersections and at waterline connection locations.
    • Traffic control signs and markings will be used for the lane closures and shifts.

    • Lane shifts with flaggers will be utilized for traffic control while work is taking place in intersections and at waterline connection locations.
    • The sidewalk on the south side of Memorial Street between Gregson and Duke streets will be closed to accommodate waterline installation.
    • Noise levels in excess of the current City noise ordinance are anticipated during work hours.
    • Planned work hours are 7 AM to 7 PM.
    • No water or sewer service disruptions are anticipated.
Saturday – Sunday October 2-3, 2021:

  • No work will take place on Saturday or Sunday.
Week of October 4, 2021:

  • Duke Street between Yancey Street / NC-147 and Pettigrew Street will have varying lane closures and traffic shifts to accommodate waterline installation and abandonments.

  • No work will take place on Saturday or Sunday.
