Wake County Public Health has unveiled a new awareness campaign called "Wake up to PrEP" to help stem the spread of HIV in the region. This initiative is focused on increasing education and providing greater access to PrEP, a preventative medication that is highly effective in reducing the risk of HIV transmission when properly used. The campaign aims to reach communities at higher risk of contracting HIV through educational materials, community programs, and partnerships with local health providers.
Wake County Commissioner Don Mial emphasized the campaign's goals, stating, “By increasing awareness and breaking down barriers to treatment, we can significantly reduce new HIV infections in our community. We want to empower our residents, especially those who may be at a higher risk of HIV exposure, to know their options and how they can access this preventive treatment.”
The program, as outlined by the North Carolina Department of Public Health, will leverage digital media, outdoor advertising, and collaboration with community organizations to spread awareness and support individuals seeking treatment.
PrEP can be taken as a daily pill or a bi-monthly injection, offering significant protection by preventing the HIV virus from establishing an infection. Proper use of PrEP reduces the risk of HIV transmission from sexual activities by approximately 99% and from injection drug use by at least 74%. The medication is recommended for people at an elevated risk of exposure, such as those with an HIV-positive partner, individuals with multiple sexual partners, those who inject drugs, and people who do not consistently use condoms. It is also a vital preventative measure for LGBTQ+ communities and others who face higher HIV prevalence.
Residents interested in learning more about PrEP, determining eligibility, or seeking treatment are encouraged to visit the Wake County Public Health website at wake.gov/PrEP.
