Today, Governor Josh Stein provided updates on North Carolina's preparations for the upcoming winter weather. He urged residents to plan ahead for snow, ice, and strong winds and to heed safety advice from local officials.

"As North Carolinians brace for another winter storm this week, we encourage all North Carolinians to listen to their local weather forecast and have a plan to stay safe," said Governor Stein. "We are monitoring the situation closely and have activated the State Emergency Response Team. I am mobilizing the Department of Transportation, the North Carolina National Guard, and the State Highway Patrol. Our utilities and local officials are also preparing. Our most important goal is to keep North Carolinians safe this week."

Will Ray, Director of Emergency Management, noted that "this winter storm will affect much of the state with winter weather, which will impact roadways and possibly cause power outages in areas where significant ice accumulates." He added that "the State Emergency Response Team remains in close coordination with our local communities, state agencies, and utility partners to quickly address any needs."

The State Emergency Response Team has been activated as of this morning. The State Emergency Operations Center and Regional Coordination Centers maintain communication with local emergency management officials to ensure resources are ready for any arising needs.

The North Carolina National Guard (NCNG) is prepared to support the state during this time. NCNG leadership has informed its force about potential inclement weather in the coming days.

Officials from the N.C. Department of Transportation are preparing for hazardous travel conditions. Maintenance crews have begun spreading brine on interstates and plan to continue with other highways before moving to secondary roads through Monday and Tuesday.

The likelihood of a winter storm impacting much of North Carolina on Wednesday into Thursday is increasing. The track and strength of a low-pressure system will determine precipitation types and amounts. Current forecasts suggest accumulating snow across mountains and northern parts of central and eastern North Carolina, while impactful ice accumulations may occur in central and eastern regions.

Residents are encouraged to visit ReadyNC.gov for more information on winter weather safety or DriveNC.gov for real-time travel updates.

North Carolina Emergency Management officials recommend paying attention to local forecasts using NOAA radios or weather alert apps; stocking up on water and non-perishable food; keeping devices charged; staying off roads if possible; dressing warmly when outside; storing an emergency kit in vehicles; gathering pet supplies; checking on friends and neighbors during severe weather; operating generators safely outdoors; avoiding indoor charcoal burning or gas grills; venting kerosene heaters properly; using battery-powered lights instead of candles.
