Hurricanes assign Ty Smith to Chicago Wolves

Eric Tulsky, General Manager of the Carolina Hurricanes, has announced that defenseman Ty Smith will be joining the Chicago Wolves in the American Hockey League (AHL).

Smith, 24, played his first game for the Hurricanes on December 28 and has since recorded two points with one goal and one assist over eight games this season. In the AHL during the 2024-25 season, he accumulated ten points with three goals and seven assists across 13 games, maintaining a plus-11 rating. The player from Lloydminster, Alberta spent the previous season with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins where he scored nine goals and made 34 assists in 63 games.

Smith was initially drafted by New Jersey in the first round as the 17th overall pick in the 2018 NHL Draft. Throughout his career in the NHL, Smith has participated in 131 games playing for New Jersey, Pittsburgh, and Carolina. He has amassed a total of nine goals and forty assists while serving fifty-two penalty minutes.
