An Ahoskie man has been sentenced to 102 months in prison for the armed robbery of a Verizon store, as well as for using a firearm during the crime. Marcus Lee Deloatch, aged 40, pleaded guilty to these charges on June 11, 2024.

Court documents and statements presented in court revealed that on December 21, 2023, Deloatch forced his way into the store through the back door while the manager was closing for the night. As a former employee of the store, he pistol-whipped the manager, knocking her to the ground before proceeding to the front where the register was located. He pointed his firearm at another employee and took $1,200 from the register. During this incident, Deloatch expressed that he believed he was owed a final paycheck of $200 by the store. He then fled through the rear exit. Both victims recognized him as their former coworker, leading police to quickly locate and arrest him. Deloatch reportedly remarked that he had not intended to be arrested until after Christmas.

The announcement was made by Michael F. Easley Jr., U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of North Carolina following sentencing by U.S. District Judge Louise W. Flanagan. The investigation was conducted by both the FBI and Ahoskie Police Department.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Phil Aubart prosecuted this case.
