NORTHBROOK, Ill. — Head coach Dave Doeren and defensive tackle Brandon Cleveland have been nominated for the 2024 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team in recognition of their commitment to community service.
Doeren is one of 11 head coaches recognized as nominees, while Cleveland is among 111 FBS nominees announced for the award.
Under Doeren's leadership, the Pack has built a relationship with Gigi's Playhouse, a Down's Syndrome achievement center, by hosting Victory Day and facilitating weekly visits during the football season. Doeren and his wife Sara also established the Doeren Family Fund, called OnePack Empowered, which supports NC State students facing challenges with executive function skills critical to academic success. The program will run for five years and aims to serve up to 50 students at a time. "They hope to inspire other donors to join them in contributing to OnePack Empowered as a sustainable source of support and guidance for an expanding number of participants over the next several years."
Cleveland actively participates in community service within Raleigh. Alongside his coaches and teammates, he distributes pizza downtown to the unhoused community and works with a regional hospital in his hometown during Christmas. Additionally, he has raised $10,000 for Feed the Pack Pantry, an NC State student-run program supporting unhoused students and those facing food insecurity.
The Allstate AFCA Good Works Team was established in 1992 to recognize college football athletes for their dedication to community service. This year's 178 nominees support various causes including mental health awareness, youth mentorship, hunger relief, and domestic abuse prevention. To be considered for the team, players must also maintain strong academic standing.
A voting panel comprising former Allstate AFCA Good Works Team members, current and former head coaches, and journalists will select the final roster of 23 award recipients later in September. The roster will include:
- 11 players from NCAA FBS
- 11 players from NCAA Football Championship Subdivision (FCS), Divisions II, III, and NAIA
- 1 honorary head coach
