Cary Town Council Approves New Map of Electoral Districts

Carytown

Town of Cary recently issued the following announcement.

The Town of Cary adopted a new map of electoral districts at its most recent Council meeting on November 9, 2021. This map, one of two options designed to maintain balance among districts, was the result of the Town’s collaboration with a team of local consultants, and also included opportunities for a public comment period held from October 8 to November 9, 2021. There was also an opportunity to participate in a Redistricting Public Hearing held on October 21, and all comments were shared with Council prior to the November 9 vote. As a next step, the new map will be submitted to the Wake County Board of Elections for use in the upcoming election on March 8, 2022. Citizens can find more information about Town Council, the upcoming election, and a search tool to find their current district and representatives at townofcary.org/districts.

While Cary’s approach was to keep the new map as intact as possible by limiting the precincts moved, some citizens may find themselves in new districts with new representatives. The Town is committed to educating and updating citizens on these changes, made in light of recently-released 2020 Census data that reflects Cary’s growing and changing population. “The adoption of this map is a crucial step in making sure that everyone’s voice counts in Cary,” said Town Attorney Lisa Glover. “It’s also a fascinating reflection of Cary’s growth, diversity, and adaptiveness over the recent years.”

While the previous Cary district boundary map adopted by Council in June 2021 greatly improved the population balance between districts, it did not meet the 5% population variance required between districts. This threshold, met by the current map, ensures that everyone’s vote counts about the same in municipal elections, the next of which occurs on March 8, 2022 for Cary.

The latest population data, resources, and more information about the redistricting process can be found at townofcary.org/redistricting. In addition, the Town will be hosting four District Open Houses in the coming weeks, where citizens can learn more about their district and Town Services. Citizens from all districts are welcome to all events. The schedule is as follows:

  • District C, Sunday, November 21, 2 – 3:30 p.m., Middle Creek Community Center, 125 Middle Creek Park Ave, Apex, NC 27539
  • District A, Monday, November 22, 5:30 – 7 p.m., Fire Station No. 5,  2101 High House Rd, Cary, NC 27519
  • District D, Thursday, December 2, 5:30 – 7 p.m., Fire Station No. 8, 408 Mills Park Dr, Cary, NC 27519
  • District B, Saturday, December 4, 3:30 - 5 p.m., Cary Town Hall, 316 N. Academy Street, Cary, NC 27513
