Throughout this week, Wake County's Solid Waste and Recycling Division is working to encourage residents to save money and reduce food waste in recognition of Food Waste Prevention Week. The initiative seeks to inspire community members to divert more waste, particularly food waste, from landfills.
"Food waste can be easily reduced, and doing so offers multiple benefits to residents, including saving them money and preserving the environmental health of our county," said Wake County Commissioner Shinica Thomas.
The division suggests that residents participate in Food Waste Prevention Week by following their Facebook page, named Wake County Waste and Recycling. They are posting daily tips aimed at reducing food waste. The division also continues to support composting food waste.
Since 2004, Wake County's Solid Waste and Recycling Division has annually awarded thousands of dollars through its Waste Reduction Grant Program. This program encourages organizations to develop projects that minimize waste heading to the county's landfill. This year, three grants have been awarded.
