The Carolina Hurricanes face a temporary setback as Jesperi Kotkaniemi will be absent from the lineup for at least a week due to an injury. The Finnish forward sustained the injury during a match against the Boston Bruins. According to the team's head coach, Rod Brind'Amour, Kotkaniemi “tweaked something” and did not play in the third period of the game. Coach Brind'Amour reassured that the injury is "nothing too serious" but confirmed, "He's out, probably, for at least a week."
Kotkaniemi's injury comes at a time when he has been a key player for the team, particularly with faceoffs, boasting a 58.3% win rate since March 2. His overall win rate of 51.9% for the season is on track to set a new personal best.
In his absence, Jordan Staal, returning from a four-game break, will take on additional responsibilities alongside Sebastian Aho. Staal has been a reliable choice for coach Brind'Amour, leading in crucial faceoff situations, especially in the defensive zone. He has taken 577 draws in that zone this season, significantly more than any other player on the team.
To adjust to Kotkaniemi's absence, Jack Roslovic has temporarily moved back to the center position, while recent trade acquisition Mark Jankowski also joins the efforts in the dot.
The game against the Buffalo Sabres provides an opportunity for both Staal and Andrei Svechnikov to return to the lineup, marking a positive note amid the challenges posed by Kotkaniemi's absence.
