Governor Josh Stein has announced that Provalus, an information technology outsourcing firm, will establish a Center of Excellence in Edenton, North Carolina. This initiative is expected to create 61 jobs and involves an investment of $6.48 million in Chowan County.
“Companies like Provalus that need skilled workers recognize North Carolina offers talent in great small-town locations like Edenton,” said Governor Josh Stein. He emphasized the state's workforce, education system, business climate, and infrastructure as key factors for attracting businesses.
Provalus, operating under Optomi, LLC since its founding in 2017, focuses on creating technology opportunities in rural American communities. The company's new project will renovate a former Sears retail store in downtown Edenton to meet client demands in cybersecurity, application development, and network operations. This expansion adds to their existing facilities in North Wilkesboro and Whiteville.
“This new Center of Excellence represents more than just business growth; it’s a testament to our commitment to empowering communities and unlocking potential,” stated Mike Keogh, President of Provalus. He expressed confidence in the region's talent and future prospects.
Commerce Secretary Lee Lilley highlighted the state's efforts to connect veterans with companies like Provalus: “As a military-friendly state with a deep pool of talented veterans, it’s great to see a company proactively tap into that strength.”
The average salary for these new positions will be $46,393 compared to Chowan County's current average wage of $46,384.
A performance-based grant of $150,000 from the One North Carolina Fund will support this project. The fund aids local governments by providing financial assistance for economic investments and job creation. Grants are contingent upon meeting specific job creation and capital investment targets.
N.C. Representative Edward Goodwin welcomed the investment: “With today’s news, our community will see more economic vitality in Edenton, Chowan County, and across the entire region.” N.C. Senator Norman Sanderson also expressed optimism about Provalus' impact on the community.
The project is supported by various partners including the North Carolina Department of Commerce, Economic Development Partnership of North Carolina, local educational institutions such as East Carolina University and Elizabeth City State University, as well as regional organizations like Main Street Edenton and the Town of Edenton.
