Attorney General Jeff Jackson has successfully obtained a preliminary injunction from a federal judge to halt an executive order aimed at ending birthright citizenship in the United States.
In his statement, Attorney General Jackson said, "This executive order was a straightforward violation of the Constitution and conflicted with longstanding Supreme Court precedent. The 14th Amendment has guaranteed birthright citizenship for over a century, and today’s ruling reinforces that fundamental principle."
The legal action against the executive order was initiated by Attorney General Jackson in January. The court's decision indicated that Jackson and other plaintiffs were "nearly certain to prevail" on their claims under the Fourteenth Amendment of the United States Constitution and the Immigration and Nationality Act.
The lawsuit was supported by Attorneys General from California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Nevada, New Mexico, New Jersey, New York, Rhode Island, Vermont, Wisconsin as well as the District of Columbia. Additionally involved were the City and County of San Francisco.
