Governor Josh Stein provided an update on the status of Interstate 40 and U.S. Department of Transportation Secretary Duffy's visit to western North Carolina.
"Today, I am pleased to announce that we will reopen two lanes of I-40 by March 1," said Governor Stein. He commended the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) and road workers for their efforts in addressing the challenges posed by Hurricane Helene. The reopening is expected to facilitate travel between North Carolina and Tennessee, boosting the local economy.
During Secretary Duffy's visit, Governor Stein highlighted the extensive damage caused by Hurricane Helene and acknowledged the ongoing partnership with the U.S. DOT. "I expressed my appreciation for U.S. DOT’s partnership and emphasized that there are billions of dollars of work still to do to get people safely back on the roads," he stated.
Governor Stein also expressed optimism about future collaboration with federal partners, noting Secretary Duffy's commitment to supporting infrastructure rebuilding efforts in western North Carolina. "It is clear to me that he intends to help," he concluded.
