Governor Josh Stein has expressed support for the Federal Emergency Management Agency's (FEMA) decision to extend its Transitional Sheltering Assistance (TSA) program by two months, now set to continue through May 26, 2025. This extension aims to provide continued housing security for disaster survivors in western North Carolina as recovery efforts from Hurricane Helene proceed.

"Today’s decision will help eligible disaster survivors stay safe and sheltered as we continue the hard work of rebuilding in western North Carolina," stated Governor Stein. He emphasized his commitment to collaborating with various governmental levels to assist those affected by the disaster. "I pledge to work with the new administration to find solutions and resources that will best serve disaster survivors in North Carolina."

The governor had previously urged FEMA Administrator Criswell to extend the TSA program beyond its original March 31 deadline, highlighting the importance of reducing uncertainty for displaced families. The extension is expected to benefit over 2,700 households currently participating in TSA, provided they maintain eligibility.

However, participation in the TSA program does not guarantee automatic eligibility through May 26, 2025. FEMA conducts ongoing reviews of participants' eligibility based on several criteria: whether their homes are habitable and safe following an inspection, if a FEMA inspection was declined by the survivor, or if FEMA has been unable to contact them despite multiple attempts.

Disaster survivors are encouraged to keep regular communication with FEMA through Disaster Recovery Centers or online platforms like disasterassistance.gov. Maintaining contact ensures their continued eligibility for assistance programs.

In response to housing challenges post-disaster, Governor Stein implemented an executive order aimed at expediting temporary housing solutions. Affected residents can apply for travel trailers under North Carolina's temporary trailer program after registering with FEMA and confirming eligibility for temporary housing.

For additional support related to Tropical Storm Helene impacts, residents can reach out to North Carolina Disaster Case Management (NC-DCM) via ncdps.gov/Helene/DCM or call 844-746-2326.
