Attorney General Josh Stein has recognized several individuals from eastern North Carolina with the Dogwood Awards for their contributions to the community. Among the honorees is District Attorney Ernie Lee, who has played a significant role in combating the fentanyl crisis. “The fentanyl crisis in our state is devastating our communities,” said Stein. He praised Lee for his leadership in shaping state policy and holding those accountable who distribute fentanyl. Lee expressed his gratitude for receiving the award and commended Stein's efforts as Attorney General.
Another recipient, District Attorney Scott Thomas, was acknowledged by Stein for his dedication to protecting local communities. “District Attorney Thomas has been working hard to protect the communities he serves,” noted Stein.
Rep. GK Butterfield was also honored for his years of service both in Congress and previously in legal roles within North Carolina. “Congressman GK Butterfield has been a friend and mentor to me for many years,” said Stein, highlighting Butterfield's long-standing commitment to public service.
Detective Brandon Peebles of Greenville received recognition not only for his work in law enforcement but also for his role as a coach leading Pitt County’s team to victory at the 2024 Little League Softball World Series. Peebles commented on the significance of making North Carolina safer and urged society not to forget the sacrifices made by law enforcement officers.
