Attorney General Josh Stein recently recognized several individuals and organizations in western North Carolina with the Attorney General’s Dogwood Award. The award acknowledges those who have contributed to improving health, safety, and well-being in their communities, particularly in response to Hurricane Helene.

Among the honorees was Black Mountain Police Chief Steve Parker. "When disaster strikes, we look to our first responders for help and guidance," said Stein. Chief Parker expressed gratitude for his team's efforts during challenging times.

Black Mountain Fire Chief John Coffey was also acknowledged for his leadership during the hurricane recovery efforts. "Chief Coffey is a shining example of what it means to be Black Mountain Strong," said Stein.

Yancey County Sheriff Shane Hilliard received recognition for his team's dedication post-hurricane. "Sheriff Hilliard and his team worked around the clock after the hurricane," said Stein.

Danny Hampton, chaplain and executive director of Freedom Life Ministries, was honored for helping individuals reintegrate into society after incarceration. "Danny and his team lead with compassion and community," said Stein.

The Biltmore estate in Asheville was recognized for its contributions to recovery efforts. "Biltmore is an Asheville institution," stated Stein.

Ashley Galleher transformed her skatepark business into a donation center following the hurricane. "She is an innovator who transformed her entire skatepark business into a donation center," noted Stein.

Ashley Cook and Freddy Carpenter were praised for their quick actions that saved lives in Minneapolis. "Their quick action to help their neighbors saved lives," said Stein.

Taylor Schenker used her skills as a graphic designer to reconnect people with lost photos through her Instagram page. "It's a privilege to play a role in reuniting these important photo memories," she said.

Detective Sam DeGrave from Asheville Police Department was commended for returning lost items found after the storm. He acknowledged other first responders' heroic efforts during the crisis.

The Lost Province Center for Cultural Arts provided essential supplies without judgment or questions, transforming an old high school into an operational storehouse.

WPTL radio station served as a vital source of information post-Hurricane Helene, providing updates when many were left uncertain about surrounding events.

Canton's Police Chief Scott Sluder was recognized for guiding Canton through tough times, while Chimney Rock Mayor Peter O’Leary exemplified resilience and optimism in leading recovery efforts.

Lake Lure Mayor Carol Pritchett's hard work towards normalcy post-disaster earned acknowledgment from Stein as well.

FizzEd restaurant owners Mike and Amy Forrester offered hot meals at no charge to first responders during critical times following Hurricane Helene's impact on Boone community members' lives significantly positively influenced by such actions taken by local businesses like theirs too!

Tommy Burleson donated profits from selling Christmas trees towards aiding organizations assisting those affected by disasters within Avery County area where he operates out today - all proceeds going directly back into helping people rebuild lives again stronger than ever before possible thanks largely due part initiatives undertaken here recently under guidance committed leadership shown
