The Carolina Hurricanes showcased a dramatic comeback against the Dallas Stars at Lenovo Center on Monday. The game marked the Hurricanes' second multi-goal, third-period comeback win of the season, a feat that ties them for the most among NHL teams. This victory was also notable as it was only the 14th time in team history since relocation that they scored five or more goals in any period.
Brent Burns scored his first goal of the season, and Martin Necas moved into a tie for the league lead in scoring. Sebastian Aho continued to climb up the record books, while Jaccob Slavin achieved something no other NHL defenseman had this season.
Martin Necas has been a standout player throughout most of the team's 15 wins this season. Although he didn't have to "drive the ship" during this game, he recorded his 11th multi-performance in 21 games. "Not only is that impressive within itself," but it's also noteworthy as it's "the first time a Canes player leads the NHL in scoring (outright or tied, minimum 20 games played) since some guy named Rod Brind’Amour was tied with Marian Hossa on Nov. 18, 2006."
Necas currently leads the NHL in Powerplay Points with 16, while Shayne Gostisbehere is tied for fifth with 12 points. The last time a Hurricanes player finished in the top five in PPP was Eric Staal in 2006.
Sebastian Aho's performance allowed him to have less scrutiny while still producing results—23 points in 21 games so far this season. On Monday, Aho posted one goal and three assists marking his third multi-point performance out of four recent games and his tenth career four-point night. This achievement ties him with Blaine Stoughton for third-most such performances in franchise history.
Aho now ranks ninth among all Finnish-born players with 147 multi-point games after surpassing Esa Tikkanen last night.
Jaccob Slavin demonstrated remarkable defensive skills during Monday's game by reaching a top speed of 24.19 mph while breaking up an odd-man rush from Dallas—the fastest by any defenseman this season according to NHL EDGE data.
