Officials from Taiwan have extended a helping hand to North Carolina by donating $300,000 to aid recovery efforts following Hurricane Helene. The funds will be directed to the North Carolina Disaster Relief Fund, which was established by Governor Roy Cooper to support communities affected by the storm.
Governor Cooper expressed gratitude for the international support, stating, “North Carolinians are determined to recover and rebuild from this horrific storm and we’re grateful for the help pouring in from across the country and around the world. It’s heartwarming to receive this donation from Taiwan and the support of its people for ours.”
The Taiwanese community is significant in North Carolina, being the second largest in the U.S. Southeastern region. There are strong economic and cultural ties between North Carolina and Taiwan.
Director General Yi-Lung Wang of the Taipei Economic & Cultural Office in Atlanta remarked on Taiwan's empathy towards North Carolina's situation: “Taiwan has experienced similar tragedies and understands the profound sense of loss that follows typhoons and earthquakes. It is this shared experience that motivates us to stand in solidarity with the people of North Carolina during this difficult time.”
United Way of North Carolina serves as the fiscal agent for the NC Disaster Relief Fund, channeling donations into grants and reimbursements for nonprofits assisting storm-affected communities.
Brian White, Board Chair for United Way of North Carolina, acknowledged global support: "With immense gratitude, we stand in awe of the outpouring of global support from friends like Taiwan... Yet, through the aftermath, we've seen a remarkable surge of kindness and aid." He emphasized their commitment to providing essential resources through both local efforts and broader initiatives like UW Helps NC Helene Recovery Fund.
Donations made to this fund are currently allocated towards immediate needs such as food, water, cleaning supplies, and other emergency provisions. More information about applying for grants or viewing recipient organizations can be found at United Way's website.
For those wishing to contribute financially to these relief efforts, donations can be made online at nc.gov/donate or mailed directly to specified addresses. Contributions are tax-deductible within legal limits.
