A Smithfield man has been sentenced to 25 years in prison for sex trafficking a minor. Jarel Antonio Rayford, aged 29, pleaded guilty on July 23, 2024, to charges of sex trafficking by force, fraud, or coercion. The sentence includes an additional 25 years of supervised release.
Court documents reveal that Rayford prostituted a 17-year-old over several months in 2021. He took explicit images of the victim and used them in online advertisements to facilitate her prostitution. Despite knowing the victim's age and vulnerability, Rayford continued the exploitation using physical and emotional abuse as means of control.
U.S. Attorney Michael F. Easley, Jr., emphasized efforts to combat human trafficking: “We have launched two Human Trafficking Task Forces to expose and prosecute anyone who exploits North Carolina’s kids for sex or forced labor.” He highlighted a victim-centric approach aimed at stabilizing victims and providing resources during court proceedings.
The announcement was made by Michael F. Easley, Jr., following sentencing by Chief U.S. District Judge Richard E. Myers II. The investigation was conducted by the Raleigh Police Department and Homeland Security Investigations with Assistant U.S. Attorneys Erin Blondel and Casey L. Peaden prosecuting.
