Attorney General Josh Stein has provided an update on the issue of price gouging related to Hurricane Helene. He emphasized the resilience of people in western North Carolina, stating, “The people in western North Carolina are tough, but we must do all we can to help.” Stein assured that his office is actively working to protect residents from fraudulent activities and individuals who might exploit the crisis for profit.

North Carolina's law against price gouging becomes effective when a state of emergency is declared by either the governor or the legislature. The law aims to prevent businesses from unreasonably increasing prices during such times. While some businesses may need to adjust prices due to increased costs associated with resupplying during emergencies, they are required to disclose these changes so consumers can make informed decisions.

Businesses are prohibited from exploiting a state of emergency by significantly raising prices for goods or services. Consumers are encouraged to report any instances of price gouging by calling 1-877-5-NO-SCAM or visiting www.ncdoj.gov/pricegouging.
