Attorney General Josh Stein today announced that North Carolina received the full share of its 2024 payments from the Tobacco Master Settlement agreement this week. The state received part of the total payment of $139.6 million on Monday and the remaining portion today.

“This money continues to be a resource for growth and development in North Carolina,” said Attorney General Josh Stein. “I thank the Golden LEAF Foundation for putting it toward helping our rural schools, economies, and infrastructure.”

Attorneys general reached the Tobacco Master Settlement agreement with tobacco companies in 1998 to settle states’ claims that the companies targeted children with their advertising and hid the addictive nature and harmful health impact of cigarettes.

The Golden LEAF Foundation will receive approximately $17.5 million from these payments to support economic growth in rural parts of the state.

Attorney General Stein has continued to lead efforts to prevent addiction and unlawful marketing practices, including his first-in-the-nation agreement with JUUL that resulted in the company paying $47.8 million and making significant changes to its business practices.
