Do not drive through standing water on roads or in parking lots. Pay attention to barricades. Don't ignore them by driving past them. Flash floods are the number one weather-related killer in the United States — most flood fatalities happen because people try to drive through deadly waters rather than avoid them. (Source: Federal Emergency Management Agency, 2005)
Please call 919-552-1400 to report flooding on the roads.
Garbage Collection
At this time, garbage collection on Friday is unaffected. As soon as garbage has been picked up, please pull carts in so they do not become a hazard.

Power Outages and Down Power Lines
Report Power Outages Online
If you see a power line that is down or tree on a power line, assume it is live and please stay away from it.
To report a down power line, call Duke Energy Progress at 1-800-419-6356. Also report these hazards to 9-1-1. Please do not call FVPD to report or to inquire about power outages.
Preparing for a Hurricane
- Ensure you have food, water, and medications for each person in your home for seven days.
- Be ready for power, utility, and phone service outages. Keep your mobile phones charged.
- Refill your gas tank and stock your vehicle with emergency supplies and a change of clothes
- Clean private drainage areas of debris to help mitigate flooding.
- Bring patio furniture and garbage cans inside; they could become dangerous in high winds
- Have enough cash on hand to last seven days
- Check out www.ready.gov/hurricanes or www.readywake.com to learn more about how to prepare for a hurricane.
Price Gouging is taking advantage of a crisis and charging too much for services or products. The State of North Carolina Attorney General's Office has created a portal for reporting price gouging. Here’s the Price Gouging Complaint form or you may call 1-877-5-NO-SCAM.
Property Damage Reports for Insurance
If you have property damage, please call your insurance carrier directly. The police department does NOT complete incident reports for such damage due to non-criminal activity/act of nature/weather.
Begin preparations to secure property to prevent damage as much as possible before the weather event occurs.
Roads: Road Conditions, Trees on Road, etc.
Stay Off the Roads
If the hurricane makes landfall and continues to the Fuquay-Varina area, it is critically important for residents to stay off the roadways. When residents venture out on the roads, they not only put themselves at risk, but they also put others in jeopardy. Then, if they are involved in an accident, police officers and first responders are at risk. Area residents can help themselves, their neighbors, law enforcement and first responders by simply staying off the roads.
Road Conditions
We will provide road condition updates as they become available. Don’t call the FVPD Highway Patrol or 9-1-1 to find out about road conditions. Check with www.DriveNC.gov before you leave to get detailed traffic info about your commute.
Tree Blocking Road
Please call 919-552-1400 to report a tree that is blocking the road.
Tree Down on Power Line
Report trees on power lines directly to Duke Energy Progress at 1-800-419-6356. Also call 9-1-1.
The town does NOT remove trees on private property. That is the responsibility of the property owner.
Traffic Signals/Lights Not Working
What to do if traffic signals are not operating?
No signal lights - Lights should be treated as a four way stop.
If power is restored and you observe the following:
Flashing red - Lights should be treated as a stop sign.
Flashing yellow - Drivers should proceed with caution only when traffic permits.
If we experience power outages throughout Town, officers will not be directing traffic at all intersections. Proceed slowly and safely according to these listed guidelines.
