City of Durham recently issued the following announcement.

The results are in! Durham’s tap water—specifically water treated at the Daniel M. Williams Water Treatment Plant—has been named Best Tasting Water in North Carolina for 2021! This marks the third consecutive award for the City’s Department of Water Management. Durham took top honors at the Annual Conference of the North Carolina American Water Works Association – Water Environment Association, which ran from November 15-17 in Winston Salem. A veteran panel of taste testers sampled eight entries from drinking water providers across the state and chose Durham as Number 1.

“This is the fifth time Durham’s tap water has been named the best tasting in the state since this competition began in 1985,” said Don Greeley, Director of the Department of Water Management. “Throughout the pandemic, Water Management personnel exhibited relentless dedication while providing the best tasting drinking water for our customers. To receive this honor for the third consecutive time speaks the department’s commitment to excellence and the high standards we set for Durham’s drinking water.”

The City also took first place honors in 2019 (Williams WTP), 2018 (Brown WTP), 2006 and 1999. The competition was not held in 2020 due to the pandemic. Durham earned second place in 1990 and 1985, and third place in 2012, 2010, 1995, and 1994.

Second place in this year’s competition went to Raleigh Water (City of Raleigh) and the Town of Cary won third place.  Triangle region water providers have consistently placed in the top three over the last several years. This was the Association’s 101st annual conference with more than 1200 water and wastewater professionals, consultants, educators and vendors attending the conference to learn about advances in the professions that provide vital services for public health and ensure economic viability in the communities they serve.
