Innovation: 15 patents granted in Raleigh in week ending Aug. 15

Patent 5

There were 15 patents granted in Raleigh in the week ending Aug. 15, according to the United States Patent and Trademark Office.

This is five more than the week before. Patents included a computing system for notifying persons of exposure to an infectious disease in a healthcare facility.

The earliest patent filed which was granted in the week ending Aug. 15 belonged to Valencell, Inc. who filed in April 29, 2014.

The number of approved patents in the U.S. grew steadily from roughly 225,000 in 2009 to more than 285,000 in 2019. The number of patents approved suffered a slight downturn in 2020.

Gene Quinn with IPWatchdog said the system underneath patents have become unwieldy, specifically for medical innovations.
