Vacations and family bonding are common summer activities, but this season also sees an increase in roadside litter. To address this issue, Wake County is encouraging residents to form groups and use available resources to clean up local roadsides.
Wake County offers free litter kits that include garbage bags, safety vests, and litter grabbers. These kits can be borrowed for up to two weeks from three designated locations. In the past year, community efforts have resulted in the collection of 245 bags containing 1.65 tons of litter.
“We see the most litter accumulate along our roads during the warmer seasons when people are traveling and spending the most time outdoors,” said Wake County Commissioner Cheryl Stallings. “Roadside litter is an easily preventable problem, but we all have a part to play in solving it. Beautifying our roadsides can also be a good outdoor activity for families and groups who want to make a difference for our environment this summer.”
Residents are also encouraged to report any instances of littering by contacting the State Highway Patrol or using the N.C. Department of Transportation’s Swat-a-Litterbug app.
