With temperatures reaching unprecedented highs in Wake County, there is a growing concern about heat-related illnesses and fatalities, particularly among vulnerable groups such as older adults, children, and individuals with medical conditions. In response, Wake County has initiated a call for public support through its Cool for Wake program, encouraging donations of air conditioners, fans, or financial contributions.
The urgency of this initiative is underscored by last year’s statistics when Wake County EMS responded to 250 heat-related emergencies. “Every summer, we see the heartbreaking reality of what extreme heat can do,” stated Shinica Thomas from the Wake County Board of Commissioners. She emphasized the critical need for community involvement to ensure that everyone has access to cooling resources.
Cool for Wake prioritizes collecting new or gently used window or portable air-conditioning units and monetary donations. While fans are still welcome, air-conditioning units and financial aid are identified as the most pressing needs this season. The county assures that all donated funds directly benefit local families since administrative costs are fully covered by the government.
Donations can be made by contacting 919-212-7083 for arrangements regarding gently used or new air-conditioning units or fans. It is important that any donated fans are in working condition.
Running from May through September, Cool for Wake relies on donor generosity and partnerships like the one with Raleigh Regional Association of Realtors Giving Network, which will contribute 40 window units this year.
