Wake County’s Solid Waste Management Division announced on Mar. 12 that it will participate in the Greatest American Cleanup, inviting volunteers to help pick up litter along Rogers Lane in Raleigh on March 21.
The event aims to address roadside litter and promote community involvement in keeping public spaces clean. Volunteers from across Wake County are encouraged to join the cleanup effort, which is part of a larger initiative involving 20 organizations from North Carolina.
The cleanup will take place next Saturday from 9 to 11 a.m., with supplies such as litter grabbers, bags, and vests provided for participants. Snacks, safety training, and a limited edition “Greatest American Cleanup” t-shirt will also be available for all who register. Wake County Commissioner Cheryl Stallings said, “Litter is a prevalent but easily preventable problem. Every resident has an individual responsibility to ensure our roads remain litter-free, and the effort of volunteers who help us clean up our environment has a long-term impact on our county.”
In addition to this event, Wake County offers free litter kits year-round so residents can organize their own group cleanups. These kits include garbage bags, safety vests, and litter grabbers and can be checked out for up to two weeks at three locations throughout the county. Since July, volunteers have spent about 62 hours collecting more than 130 bags—equivalent to 1.3 tons—of litter from local roads and outdoor areas.
The Greatest American Cleanup is hosted in partnership with Keep America Beautiful. Residents seeking more information or wishing to participate can contact Environmental Education Program Coordinator Chelsea Arey at chelsea.arey@wake.gov or visit wake.gov/recycling for details about other waste reduction programs.
