Wake County’s Solid Waste division, collaborating with BrandBuilders, has launched its annual sale of Earth Machines to promote backyard composting. The sale offers these composting bins at a price of $54.95, which is 50% off their usual retail cost, throughout the month of May. Orders can be placed online until May 31, and each purchase includes a 20-page handbook on composting practices.

“Composting is one of the easiest and most impactful ways to help the environment—it cuts down landfill waste, reduces pollution and gives new life to natural resources,” stated Wake County Commissioner Cheryl Stallings. “This annual sale makes it easy and affordable for Wake County residents to jump in and make a difference.”

Beginning mid-June, purchasers can collect their bins from the North Wake Solid Waste Management facilities in Raleigh, located at 9025 Deponie Drive. The bins, which stand approximately 3 feet tall and can hold up to 80 gallons, must be picked up as delivery is not provided. Pick-up times are Monday through Friday between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m.

To support new composters, Wake County offers instructional videos on assembling Earth Machines and composting at home, along with an online digital guide. It’s noted that food and yard waste, accounting for about 34% of average household garbage in Wake County, can either be composted or sent to the South Wake Landfill, where disposal creates pollution. An individual who composts can redirect around 500 pounds of waste from the landfill yearly.

More information and the option to order bins are available at wake.gov/compost.

Wake County Solid Waste Management Division operates 19 waste facilities, including a landfill, a waste transfer station, residential waste and recycling centers, household hazardous waste, and multi-material recycling drop-off facilities. Further details are accessible at wake.gov/recycling.
