June marks National Adopt a Shelter Cat Month, coinciding with kitten season at the Wake County Animal Center. This period sees an influx of kittens in need of homes. Wake County Commissioner Tara Waters emphasized the importance of community involvement, stating, “Now’s the purr-fect time to adopt, foster, volunteer or help spread the word and make a big difference for these little lives.” She highlighted that every action counts, whether it involves adopting, fostering, or sharing stories.
To encourage adoptions, the Wake County Animal Center is hosting a special event throughout June. During this time, any cat over six months old can be adopted for $5. Currently, there are 12 cats and 11 kittens available for adoption at the center, with nine more cats in foster care. All adoptions include spay/neuter surgery, vaccinations, and a microchip.
The center also offers guidance on handling outdoor kittens found during this season. Often, mother cats are temporarily away searching for food and will return to their litter. It’s advised that kittens remain with their mothers until they are at least eight weeks old to ensure proper health and development.
Those interested in adopting can visit the shelter’s adoption gallery online or stop by in person. The shelter is open daily from noon to 6 p.m., located at 820 Beacon Lake Drive near I-440 and New Bern Avenue in Raleigh.
