Wake County has opened applications for the next class of its Career in a Year Fire Academy, a program started in 2021 that aims to recruit and train new firefighters. The academy is known for its approach to recruiting and for the academic performance of its graduates.
Participants selected for the program will receive a salary and benefits during the 38-week training period. Upon completion, graduates will earn both EMT and Firefighter certifications and begin work with local fire departments. Applications are being accepted through August 29, 2025.
“Our Career in a Year Fire Academy is an extraordinary program that empowers dedicated people who are brave enough to step up and serve their communities,” said Wake County Commissioner Vickie Adamson. “We are incredibly proud to take part in this powerful partnership that helps talented recruits pursue a life-changing career they may not have otherwise considered.”
The project was approved by the Wake County Board of Commissioners and is funded by the American Rescue Plan Act. Since its launch, it has helped increase recruitment across Wake County’s fire service, using targeted outreach efforts that have expanded awareness about firefighting careers and increased the number of applicants more than tenfold.
The Career in a Year Fire Academy is run in partnership with Wake Technical Community College. More information about upcoming information sessions and how to apply can be found at wake.gov/FireCareer.
