Wake County’s Solid Waste and Recycling Division is offering alternative options for residents to dispose of household hazardous waste. This follows a fire on January 22 that severely damaged the main storage building at the North Wake Household Hazardous Waste Facility in Raleigh, leading to a suspension of regular operations at the site.
To maintain safe disposal services, Wake County established Saturday-only collection services starting March 15. These are held at a facility next to the North Wake site from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Due to state permit regulations, materials must be collected on the same day they are dropped off as the temporary facility cannot store them. Therefore, collections are limited to one day per week until full restoration of the facility.
“In Wake County, we work to provide excellent service, facilities and programming to help reduce landfilled waste and boost environmental health,” said Wake County Commissioner Cheryl Stallings. “We understand it’s important for residents to have convenient access to alternative facilities if we want them to continue exercising environmentally conscious habits.”
Residents can also use other locations for disposal but should check acceptable items and quantity limits before visiting any facility.
