Residents of Wake County can now monitor the progress of library projects funded by a $142 million bond through a new website. The bond was approved by voters in November and aims to enhance the county’s public library system.
The newly launched site, wake.gov/LibraryBond24, serves as a centralized platform offering detailed information on each project funded by the bond. It includes a comprehensive chart that outlines the current status, estimated opening dates, and development phases such as land acquisition, planning, design, or construction.
“Voters approved this bond, so we want to keep them informed when it comes to progress on projects,” stated Wake County Commissioner Vickie Adamson. “It allows residents to see exactly how their tax dollars are being invested in modernizing and expanding access to public libraries.”
Despite potential timeline adjustments due to factors like vendor availability, the first set of projects is anticipated for completion by 2028. This phase will include renovations at Richard B. Harrison Community Library, Express Library – Fayetteville Street, and the Library Administration Building; replacement of Athens Drive Community Library; and construction of a new community library in Rolesville.
The bond received approval from 56% of voters last November and will support both new constructions and upgrades for existing libraries. To ensure more residents have convenient access to public libraries within a 10-minute drive from their homes, several initiatives are planned.
To accommodate population growth impacting library services, the Fuquay-Varina Community Library will be expanded into a regional facility. Notably, this library recorded the highest circulation among all community libraries during fiscal year 2024 — surpassing even some regional libraries.
Renovations will address various needs including aging facilities and building system upgrades such as heating, ventilation, air conditioning systems (HVAC), roof replacements, furniture updates along with other enhancements.
Regular updates on these developments can be accessed at wake.gov/LibraryBond24.
