Wake County announced on Apr. 8 the launch of a new website and public survey as part of its Beyond the South Wake Landfill Study, which aims to plan for future waste management strategies as the South Wake Landfill nears the end of its operational life.

The initiative is designed to gather community input and provide accessible information as officials consider long-term options for handling waste in the county. The project emphasizes transparency and resident engagement throughout the planning process.

“This study is about planning ahead and listening closely,” said Wake County Commissioner Shinica Thomas. “We know residents care deeply about how waste is managed today and how decisions made now can shape the future. The Beyond the South Wake Landfill Study gives us a framework to explore options thoughtfully, transparently and with community input at the center.”

Over several years, county leaders will assess various approaches to managing waste, taking into account operational needs, environmental impact, financial considerations, and community priorities. The study itself will not make decisions but will instead provide data, analysis, and feedback from residents to guide future discussions by county officials.

Public participation is encouraged through multiple opportunities such as surveys and events where residents can learn more about proposals or share their views. The newly launched website serves as a central hub for information on the study’s progress, updates on upcoming activities, and ways for residents to get involved.

As work continues on this long-term effort, officials say that ongoing updates will be posted online so that all interested parties can stay informed.
