Being a teenager today presents unique challenges, with the pressures of social media and constant expectations. To address these issues, Wake County is organizing the 2025 Teen Summer Kickback, a free one-day event for students to disconnect and build confidence.
Scheduled for Saturday, August 2, from 1-9 p.m. at the McKimmon Center at NC State, this event is open to teens aged 13 to 18 who are currently enrolled in school.
“Teens today face a lot of pressures and misinformation, especially online,” said Wake County Commissioner Cheryl Stallings. “Our hope is that every teen who attends has a safe, inclusive space to get the facts and develop life skills that will serve them for years to come.”
The summit is led by the Wake County HIV, STD & Hep C Community Program and Wake County Child Welfare. It will address topics such as comprehensive sex education, HIV/STI prevention, healthy communication, peer pressure, substance use, and the influence of social media on youth behavior.
A new feature this year includes a session for parents and caregivers focusing on the Five Protective Factors framework aimed at strengthening families and supporting youth development.
Space is limited and registration is required through wake.gov/teensummit. The event is presented by Wake County Public Health and Wake County Social Services in collaboration with the Wake Partners HIV/STI Coalition.
