At the July 22 meeting, five members of the Wake County Board of Elections took their oaths of office. Angela Hawkins, Erica Porter, Gerry Cohen, and Keith Weatherly are returning for another term, while Steven Long will serve his first term on the Board.

“As Chair, I’m committed to upholding the highest standards of transparency, ensuring that every step of our election process, from voter registration and ballot counting to audits, remains open, verifiable, and accountable to the public,” said newly appointed Board Chair Angela Hawkins. She is now serving her fourth term. “I look forward to working collaboratively with all Board members over the next two-year term to support and strengthen these vital efforts.”

The Board also voted to appoint Gerry Cohen as Secretary for the upcoming term. He will be serving a fourth term on the Board.

These members play critical roles in elections by appointing all chief judges, judges, assistants and other election officers. They investigate irregularities and oversee all election challenges and protests within their jurisdiction. Additionally, they select early voting sites and Election Day polling places; approve absentee ballots; oversee the budget and selection of voting equipment; and canvass election returns.

The next meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, Aug. 19. A full schedule of upcoming meetings can be found at the Wake County Board of Elections website.
