The Wake County Board of Commissioners has selected new leadership for the coming year. Commissioner Don Mial will serve as chair, while Commissioner Safiyah Jackson has been named vice chair.

Chair Don Mial, who joined the board in 2022, currently serves as vice chair of the Public Safety Committee and is a member of the Growth, Sustainability, and Economic Strength Committee. In his statement, Mial said, “I’m honored to serve alongside the other dedicated public servants on this board. Together, we’ll drive progress on Wake County’s top priorities, from affordable housing to public safety, while investing in the parks, libraries and shared spaces that connect us.”

Safiyah Jackson was appointed to the board in 2025. She acts as liaison to both the Wake County Housing Authority and Passage Home Boards and chairs the Affordable Housing Committee. Jackson also works as chief strategy officer for the North Carolina Partnership for Children. “Wake County is a dynamic community in a pivotal moment of growth; I’m excited to contribute my fresh perspective as a new leader to the board,” Jackson said. “Over the coming year, I look forward to working together with the chair and my fellow commissioners to enhance the essential services that support our 1.2 million residents every day.”

Both Mial and Jackson will hold their leadership roles through December 2026. Information about upcoming meetings and agendas can be found on the Wake County Board of Commissioners’ website.
